Every Journey has it's end...

We are now at the last quarter of this school year and it was a fun and memorable ride for all of us students. It is very hard to study due to the ongoing pandemic and we students are just staying at home. During this 4th quarter, I have learned many techniques and skills that made my work more easily. I learned a lot this 4th quarter especially in our subject ICT because of the new lesson that I don’t have idea on it. It is the Microsoft FrontPage and it allows us to create web pages. I easily understand how MS Frontpage works with the help of my brother.

I have also encountered many challenges and problems during this 4th quarter. One of these is the slow internet connection. Having slow internet connection is very hard because I cannot attend google meetings and search the information that I don’t know. I find it very difficult to read the concept notes that have given to me because of my surroundings. I have also encountered problems like lagging smartphone and slow laptop response. With the hard work and dedication, I have finished all the given tasks with the given time. I also struggled learning our lessons in Mathematics and Basic Electronics because of the complicated computations that have given. I I’m not a fan of analyzing and studying computations.

Moving on, I will work hard and do my best to learn and analyze the lessons without the help of the internet. One of the techniques that I do in answering the tasks given is asking my family members and friends for help. I will do my best and to achieve my goals in life. I will do everything just to be successful in life.

A Day to Remember

It is a public holiday and it is the most special holiday in the Philippines. It is a day off for the general population of the Philippines, schools and sometimes businesses. One of the most significant day in the Philippines, June 12 and it is Independence day. This day marks the nations independence from the Spanish colonization, June 12, 1898. Filipino celebrates it every year in June 12.

The annual June 12 observance of Philippine’s Independence Day came into effect after past President Diosdado Macapagal signed the Republic Act No. 4166 regarding this matter on August 4, 1964.  This Act legalized the holiday, which is based on the Declaration of Independence on June 12, 1898 by General Emilio Aguinaldo and Filipino revolutionary forces from the Spanish colonization.  The Philippines’ flag was raised and its national anthem was played for the first time in 1898.  However, liberty was short-lived because Spain and the United States did not recognize the declaration. The 1898 Treaty of Paris ended the war between Spain and the United States. Spain surrendered the entire archipelago comprising the Philippines to the United States.  The Philippines started a revolt against the United States in 1899 and achieved national sovereignty on July 4, 1946, through the Treaty of Manila.  Independence Day was officially observed on July 4 until the Republic Act No. 4166, which set out to move the holiday to June 12, was approved on August 4, 1964. It is good that Filipinos still celebrates Independence Day and is really shows how we preserved our culture and history in our own land.

Saturday, June 12, 2021, is Philippines Independence Day, or as locals call it, “Araw ng Kasarinlan” (“Day of Freedom”). This annual national holiday honors Philippine independence from Spain in 1898. In this year 2021, people will most likely celebrate Independence day in their own houses because of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. This year, people will enjoy more Pinoy dishes with their family and friends. Fireworks and patriotic celebrations happen across the world on June 12, but some Filipinos will choose raising their flags instead of fireworks.

Healing the World

In this world that we are living, we humans are depending on it just like water, food, medicines, clothes, and homes. But what happens if all these things are used and there are all going to extinct. Well, we are experiencing it right now that’s why we have programs about restoring our Earth and preventing it for more damage. Environment Day is about preventing, restoring, and reversing our environment from getting damaged. It is about preventing environmental damages to our Earth’s ecosystem. During this day, people will help the environment grow and restore itself just like plating trees.

The World Environment Day is June 5, 2021, To mark this day we wanted to highlight the resilient and resourceful farmers we are honored to work alongside, who are helping to heal their local ecosystems. Ecosystems are the interaction between plants, animals and people, and their surroundings such as nature, cities and farms (UN, 2021). For far too long, people have been exploiting and destroying our Earth’s ecosystems causing the loss of natural habitats and carbon sinks, which in turn intensifies the climate crisis. We all depend on healthy ecosystems for our survival. Calamities and crisis that we all are experiencing is what we have done. It is all our fault that our Earth is dying and we should be ashamed to the God because it was given to us to protect and not to destroy it. But we humans are not doing that instead we are doing its opposite. If we are going to analyze the things that is happening in our world, those big companies are the ones who are mainly destroying our ecosystem. They don’t mind their surroundings but all they have in their mind is their money that they will going to produce in that kind of activity that they are doing. Mining, Illegal fishing, deforestation, urbanization; these are just some of the things that have greatly effect in destroying our environment. Locals like farmers, fishermen’s, and people who are living in the uplands are the one we should thank to because they are the one who are in capable of caring our environment. The theme for Environment Day 2021 is Ecosystem Restoration. Ecosystem restoration means assisting in the recovery of ecosystems that have been degraded or destroyed, as well as conserving the ecosystems that are still intact. Healthier ecosystems, with richer biodiversity, yield greater benefits such as more fertile soils, bigger yields of timber and fish, and larger stores of greenhouse gases. Restoration can happen in many ways – for example through actively planting or by removing pressures so that nature can recover on its own. It is not always possible – or desirable – to return an ecosystem to its original state. We still need farmland and infrastructure on land that was once forest, for instance, and ecosystems, like societies, need to adapt to a changing climate.

We humans can do the things that are possible and impossible if we work together. Together we can restore our Environment to its healthy state. We wouldn’t want for the next generation to experience the consequences for the things that we have done. All thanks to this pandemic that are ecosystem is healing all by itself.

“Only with healthy ecosystems can we enhance people’s livelihoods, counteract climate change and stop the collapse of biodiversity.” – UN, World Environment Day, 2021.

Do You Juana...

We live in a world where chaos, wars, discrimination, and inequality is normal. Our world is always changing, what I mean about changing is the people that lives in it and due to these changes that happens in our world many of us will be left out. In the past years of human existence, women are always at the bottom. We are now living in 21st century and questioning women’s abilities, skills, and capabilities are one of the biggest mistakes that you will ever done. Women these days are very different due to the fact that centuries ago, movements of women are very limited and it is very hard. They were not allowed to do anything but household chores, not letting women to study, and many more. In these situations, we cannot see gender equality and men are always believed to be stronger compared to women. To the point wherein men have more opportunities than women because not only a single chance had given to them. Throughout history, women have made extraordinary contributions to their societies. Some are well known, some are less so, but all have been trail blazers.

If men have the opportunities to do the things that they want and not worrying about the consequences of their doings, then maybe women can get the same opportunities and have the chance to show their skills and abilities and what are they really capable of. The question is what women can do or what a Bigueñan women can do. Mother, Wife, Doctor, Nurse, Teacher, Soldier, Police, whatever a woman is, should be respected and be empowered. What Bigueñan women can do especially we are experiencing this ongoing Covid-19 Pandemic. Women during this pandemic is very helpful and also hardworking especially our front liners. They help us in every aspect like disciplining the people, our police and soldier women. Our nurses and doctors, they help us in our health and treated us nicely. I know a Biqueñan woman that her work was really affected by this pandemic and with the hard work and determination that she had, she did not let the pandemic to stop her from working. She started selling plants from Php 100 to Php 200 and her costumers were small. She begun to invest her plants, she trade it to another plant owner and treat the plant until it grows and sell it. With the help of his husband, she is now selling plants from Php 600 to Php 1000. We can really see the hard work and determination of that woman. Women are not just women, they are incredible and some can be your father and also your mother. I know a woman that during this pandemic, she is acting as a mother and a father into her only son. She is brave and hard working woman.

Many woman are still experiencing less opportunities in their lives, some are not given once. We are all creation of God and we do not have the right to look down on others because we are all the same. We are all crafted by God and we are made to care, to love, and to respect one another. Women empowerment is empowering women. Empowering their self’s worth, their ability to have and determine their own decisions in life, and their right to influence and change the other for the better. It's so important for women self-esteem and also for societies. Empowering women is to give women the right. Women can have equal right to participate in education, society, economy and politically. Women can involve in society as they are glad to choose their religious, language, work and other activities. Several women are known and honoured but I know many are out there fighting for their lives and rights to do the things that they wanted. We witnessed how woman can be strong. We witnessed a determined Bigueñan woman to work hard and fight for their lives in this world. Just like the Bigueñan women said- “I never dreamed about success, I worked for it”.

Mother's Love

It is celebrated every year on the second Sunday of May. Mother's Day is an occasion which is celebrated in various parts of the world to express respect, honor, and love towards mothers. The day is an event to honor the contribution of mothers, acknowledge the efforts of maternal bonds and the role of mothers in our home and in our society. Mother will be the first and special woman in everyone’s life, right. Not a specific day needed for celebrating the mom. But, celebrating and honoring mom on Mother’s Day is essential to make mom feel blessed and proud.

In the United States of America, Mother’s day is celebrated through love cards and eating. Children cook breakfast for their moms, buy them flowers and shower them with small surprises. Way back 1914 when Mother’s day first celebrated in United States. Celebrating Mother’s Day here in the Philippines is pretty similar to other countries like America, with chocolates and flowers and various gifts to pamper mom. While a lot of Filipinos are opting more and more to eat out, most families still celebrate at home. Mother is the first friend of all children, you share your emotions and thoughts with your mother. Mother’s Day is a special time of year where you will honor your first best friend and the one you still go to for advice. Mother’s Day is also an excellent opportunity to express your gratitude to all the other amazing people in your life. It is very special and memorable especially to our mothers when we honor them as our mothers and thanks them for all the sacrifices that they have done.

Mother will always appreciate the thoughtful present and so mother’s day is not all about spending money. It is one special day in the year to show your love to your mom. As a son or daughter, you need to make the day something special and not like the regular days. Your mom will have lots of wishes in heart and it is now your responsibility to bring all her dreams to come true on this exclusive day for her. Every day, we must show our love and care to our mother and always respect them if possible because they are always there when nothing is around for us, they are the ones who taught us how to talk, write, and read.

Unexpected Things

Let’s go back where the Binatbatan festival really came from and let’s understand what really happened in December 1882. Festivals are an expressive way to celebrate glorious heritage, culture and traditions. They are meant to rejoice special moments and emotions in our lives with our loved ones. They play an important role to add structure to our social lives, and connect us with our families and backgrounds. The celebration of Vigan Binatbatan festival is different compared to previous years because of the ongoing pandemic.

Vigan Binatbatan Festival of the Arts were yearly celebrated from the last week of April up to the first week of May. Binatbatan festival was originally started during an epidemic in 1882. The festival began when an epidemic killed over 934 residents in a month. The epidemic started November 12 and ended December 15. This happened 30 years after a chapel was built in 1852 in the cemetery of Vigan. The huge number of death in such short time alarmed the residents that they asked Dr. Evaristo Abaya, then the parish priest, to request for the visit to Vigan of the Santo Cristo Milagroso of Sinait town. The Santo Milagroso was venerated by the people with a nine-day novena. When the novena progressed for days, the number of death decreased, and on the last day, the epidemic stopped. The people glorified God for the miracle. Almost all residents attended the Holy Mass in honor of Santo Cristo. In gratitude, the residents of Vigan chose the third day of May as thanksgiving day for Santo Cristo whom they call “Apo Lakay”. This is the feast day of the Holy Cross and the Santo Cristo of Sinait town. Since then on Fridays and third day of May, people have been going to the cemetery chapel called Simbaan a Bassit to hear Holy Mass, and continue their devotion to Apo Lakay.

It is wonderful that during these days we are able to celebrate the said festival with the ongoing pandemic. I hope “Apo lakay” will have another miracle and the ongoing pandemic, the Covid-19. It really shows how we love preserve our traditions and cultures in our own land. This year Binatbatan festival is different and we must follow strict health protocols but nothing can stop our devotion to God. I hope that this Covid-19 pandemic will come to end and everyone will go back to their normal lives and live safely again.
